What Is The Jena 6

A little background for those that do not know, the Jena 6 are six Black students who face the possibility of going to prison for very long time, all because of a schoolyard fight. Almost a year ago, in the small town of Jena, Louisiana a group of Black students sat under a “whites-only” tree in the schoolyard. Yes they still have them.

Apparently, this upset some of the white students so much that the next day they put up nooses hanging from the tree. Soon after the nooses were hung, most of the 93 Black students (out of a total student enrollment of 546) at Jena High School stood together under the tree, in a courageous act of protest.

It wasn't long after this that a a school assembly was called, where a white district attorney told the Black students to just keep their mouths shut about the nooses. He told them if he heard anything else about it, he “can make their lives go away with the stroke of his pen.”

This eventually led to a fight that sent one white student to the hospital and six Black students to jail and that’s when all the comotion and eventual hell broke loose.

The Jena 6 are Robert Bailey (17), Theo Shaw (17), Carwin Jones (18), Bryant Purvis (17), Mychal Bell (16) and an unidentified minor. All were expelled from school, arrested and charged with second-degree attempted murder. Bail was set so high starting at $70,000 and going as high as$138,000 that the they were left in prison for months as families went deep into debt to release them.

Here at Jena-6 .blogspot we will devote this entire site to the Jena 6 story. It is said to be covered by Oprah soon, only time will tell. We will keep you up to date on that as well.

Residents wonder if national attention will calm racial tensions

Chris Johnson, 25, says discrimination has existed all his life in Jena, La. "I think things will change," he said. JENA, La. – There were two main points of view in Jena on Friday, a day after tens of thousands of civil rights protesters effectively closed this fading sawmill town.

Some people believe life will never be the same. Others say things may never change.

And like many issues here, what you think seems to depend on the color of your skin.

Chris Johnson, a lanky 25-year-old black man, said the chanting and cheering crowds awakened the nation's consciousness. Jena can't go back.

"Now that people have seen what we've had to put up with so long, I think things will change," he said. "I hope they do."

A few doors away, Ron Liles, a 63-year-old white fire inspector, was skeptical. He said it takes time and patience to change men's hearts.

"In a way, this may be good for Jena," he said. "This kind of thing makes you deal with the problem."

On Friday, television cameras were still stationed outside the LaSalle Parish Courthouse as a judge rejected a motion that would have given 17-year-old Mychal Bell a chance at freedom.

Mr. Bell is the only one of the black teenagers known as the Jena Six to be tried so far in the December beating of a white classmate.

He was convicted of aggravated second-degree battery. But the conviction was thrown out by a state appeals court that said he could not be tried on the charge as an adult because he was 16 at the time of the beating.

After the juvenile court hearing Friday, his mother emerged from the courthouse in tears.

Behind the court building, Calvin Hardy leaned against the bed of his maroon Toyota pickup truck, perspiration beading on his freckled brow, and smiled broadly at what he called "a piece of history."

Mr. Hardy chainsawed down the infamous live oak tree at Jena High School this summer.
That was the gathering place for white students, under which black students sat in August 2006. Nooses were on the tree the next day, and tensions escalated, resulting in the December attack.

Mr. Hardy pointed to a piece of the tree's severed trunk in the back of his truck.

"It was a beautiful tree; I didn't see no reason to cut it," he said. "They wanted it down to keep the conflict down, I guess."

Mr. Hardy was paid $500 by the school for his work but plans to cash in on the controversy again. "I got seven kids," he said, mentioning that he might sell the log on eBay. "I never got a piece of history before. I figured I better hold on to it."

Moments later, LaSalle Parish Superintendent Roy Breithaupt walked across the street to confront Mr. Hardy about showcasing and selling the log. "It's a shame that people would want to profit as a result of people's discomfort and confusion," he said.

Many people, including a federal investigator, criticize Mr. Breithaupt for under-reacting last year when three white students hung the nooses from the tree.

Mr. Breithaupt defended his decisions Friday afternoon. The three white teens responsible for the hangman's nooses, who were suspended instead of expelled, as the principal had recommended, had not been in serious trouble before. He said there was no evidence to suggest that the group meant to harm anyone.

He said their actions were impulsive and irresponsible. As to the December arrest and felony charges against the Jena Six, Mr. Breithaupt said the case has been handled fairly. "That was a premeditated ambush and attack by six students on one student," he said. "He was beaten down into a bloody, unconscious state."

Jena's schools were closed a second day Friday. Mr. Breithaupt said extra security would be on hand when classes resume Monday.

Tensions continued to run high in the area.

Two teenagers were arrested in nearby Alexandria after police said they were trying to provoke a group of protesters waiting to catch a bus home by repeatedly driving their truck – with hangman nooses dangling off the back – past them.

Jeremiah Munsen, 18, of Colfax, La., was charged with inciting a riot, driving while intoxicated and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile. A city attorney will decide whether to file charges against the 16-year-old boy from Dry Prong, La., who was in the truck.

JENA HIGH

Jena High School, like most other schools in the country, was once pleasant
and segregated. Then, Earl Warren demanded that N-words be forced in and
there wasn't much joy in Jena -- or anywhere else -- as a result. Instead
of halls of learning, schools became dog-fights, with white kids having to
scrap, every day, just to stay alive. Prior to integration, the worst offenses
in school were chewing gum in class, being late for class and yelling in the
halls. After integration, it was rapes, assaults and murder.

Jena broke into the news because the kids had finally had enough. Mychal
Bell, Theo Shaw and Robert Bailey and their gang had bragged about their
"black-power" on their websites and about how they were big, bad "Black
Africans." But, bragging wasn't enough. They had to act their jungle-savagery
out by ganging up on Justin Barker, knocking him unconscious and beating him
nearly to death. Six of them. As predicted, the N-words all stuck together,
blaming everybody but themselves.

What made matters worse was the "wiggers," whites who talk, dress and act
like N-words, who immediately took up for Bell and company. Although Jena
turned its back on the N-words, some parents seemed to throw up their
hands in helplessness or, even, offer to "unite" with the N-words. The Jena
kids protested by hanging nooses on a tree, but were suspended from school.
So, with the staunchest resistance out of commission, Jena girls became easy
prey for the N-words.

The puzzle then became, "How to keep your girl-friend away from the N-words?"
The object of this game is to place five N-words (each represented by an
N-word fist) and three Jenans (each represented by a Jena-fist) on the grid, so
that none of the N-words can get his vile hands on any of the Jenans (or on any
of the girls which the Jenans are protecting). An N-word can move any number
of spaces in any direction in a straight line (horizontally, vertically or diagonally).
To place an N-word on the grid, click once on an empty square. To place a
Jenan on the grid, click once on an N-word. To make a square empty again,
click once on a Jenan.

The goal, already set out, long ago, by the "Chicago Defender" in 1946, is
for "white boys to date Negro girls." By "Father Divine," to propagate "the
virtue of inter-racial marriage." And, by James S. Logan, a Communist, in his
pamphlet "Negro Liberation," referring to the red, green and black flags, later
to be flown during the invasion of Jena:

"The Negro people of the Black Belt, where they have formed the majority of
the population for many generations and where they have developed as a
people, have the right to set up a Republic of the Black Belt in which the
Negro would exercise governmental authority.... The Communist Party of
the U.S.A. strives to unite the Negro."

But, this game answers the puzzle-question, "Can the Jenans -- indeed, can
the American people -- win against the N-words?" Are there enough like Justin
Sloan, Ben Gaines, Lonnie Chevallier, Jeremiah Munsen and Marlon Hopkins
to carry the day? The answer is, "Yes." There are Jenans -- indeed,
Americans everywhere -- who have the stamina to stand up for their school,
blood, nation and honor. Even, as the puzzle shows, if they are outnumbered
by the N-words.

AN OPEN-LETTER TO KELLI BARKER

Patricia S. Godwin

Dear Mrs. Barker,

I watched the "Dr. Phil" program, regarding the now fashionably labeled "Jena-Six"
incident. First, let me say, as a mother of two sons, my heart goes out to you and your
family, especially Justin, as he is the physical victim in this unfortunate event in your
personal lives, as well as the entire community of Jena, Louisiana. Selma, Alabama
is my home and I know what it is like to be viewed by the world as a "racist fish-bowl,"
but you must realize that all of this has been by design, orchestrated long ago, and
is being used to further a political agenda at the expense of your family and residents
of Jena.

Mrs. Barker, real justice for your son is the primary objective. Mrs. Barker, hate is not
a natural thing; it is not born in us -- it is taught. And, now, the liberal left and the federal
government are using this manufactured "hate" to further destroy our Constitution as our
Founding Fathers intended and destroy the racial-harmony Jena previously enjoyed.

Mrs. Barker, I don't like to use the word "racist," but, I think you are one of millions, who
really need to know the concept behind the word "racist." In his introduction of Attorney
Richard Barrett, Dr. Phil set the stage for America to form a preconceived, negative
attitude toward Mr. Barrett, even before he was allowed to speak and, then, only
"sound-bites" were allowed to be aired, which did not give the viewing audience a fair
concept of Mr. Barrett's philosophy and his good-intentions toward your family.

Plus, I was very disappointed that you publicly denied Mr. Barrett's proffer of friendship,
just as Simon Peter denied knowing Jesus Christ. Lulling you into this denial was by design
and your remarks "begging" Dr. Phil not to allow Mr. Barrett on the program only showed
you to have abandoned the real issue -- your son's attack -- and allowed yourself to be
ashamed of your race. If I could define the word "racist," I would say "one who protects
and preserves one's own race." However, both "racist" and "racism" are Marxist words,
used to shut down debate.

Again, Mrs. Barker, as soon as you thought you were going to be labeled a "racist," you
abandoned the real issue -- the blatant attack on your son and justice, thus the real facts
were never enumerated on this program. Be proud of your race -- please don't aid and abet
Al Sharpton's and Jesse Jackson's extortion of America. I was very disappointed that Dr.
Phil did not mention many pertinent facts regarding this situation and, also, that neither
you nor Mr. Barker spoke out to rectify this deliberate oversight.

Mrs. Barker, had this been my son, this dialog or lack thereof totally negating the facts
would have incensed me right there on stage. Why didn't you and Mr. Barker speak up
and demand that the dialog state these facts, during the pre-taping of this program? Do
you wonder how so many people were bussed into Jena, in such a short time? Do you
wonder if these people had jobs or were they paid to "come-to-Jena-for-a-day"? Mrs.
Barker, those thousands that came to Selma back in 1965 were paid $10 per day (in
1965, $10 was a lot of money) and promised all the sex and alcohol they could stand.

Have you wondered what Mychal Bell's parents are getting out of this? Have you
wondered where all the black "concerned" citizens were when the jury summonses were
issued? I believe these are serious points to ponder. Dr. Phil is an entertainer.
Sensationalism makes for good ratings. But, Mrs. Barker, don't sell out your soul and
your son to the devil for ratings. Be proud of your race, defend your son and demand
that justice be served.
